The Muscadine Grape industry in North Carolina is very important for the economy and it is one that continues to grow. This means that vineyards responsible for producing these grapes have to put every effort possible into protecting them and specifically, the growth of the grapes. What this means is that knowing what the possible threats are for the muscadine grape crops which will include different types of pests and diseases. Then the next step is knowing how to deal with these.

Common Diseases

While the muscadine grapes are considered to be a hardy species, they are still prone to some diseases.

Bitter Rot

This is a condition that can hit the plants just after they start blooming and just prior to harvest. What happens is that the berries turn black. This is a type of fungus that can affect various parts of the plant like its stems and leaves and even the root.

Angular Leaf Rot

Here, it is the leaves of the plant that become affected and if left unattended to, the plant loses its foliage. It can get to the point where the quality of the muscadine grapes can be affected and the yield of the affected plants will be reduced.

Ripe Rot

The ripe rot has become more evident in recent years and it happens close to harvest time, although it can start to occur during any of the growing stages. The problem with this disease is that it can spread quickly to the rest of the crops.

Black Rot

Black rot is another form of rot but is more easily controlled and is seldom worried about when it comes to damage if the crops have been properly sprayed.

Those who have vineyards comprised of the muscadine grapes have to be aware of not only these potential diseases but many others.
